4 Simple ways to release your Creativity!!!

One question I am often asked is, what inspires you to create or design your products. Every time I feel helpless to answer this because I never have felt it is one simple thing. It really isn’t 4 simple things either…but, when you release the creativity inside you, or into the atmosphere…then, it is in that RELEASE that you can flow…you can CREATE!! So, as unashamed as I am to list some of the ways I release my creativity, I have to say that these work for me. Hopefully, you will try these, but even more I hope that when you do you find your own ways…and when you do, SHARE them with the world!

    1.  ATMOSPHERE- Setting the Mood

I have always felt that setting the right mood, or getting the environment just right to create in… is a HUGE deal! Really, this basically comes down do lighting, music/sounds, furniture/layout arrangement, etc.  For me, after trying several different types of music and radio stations…I finally realized that only the classical or Movie Score music was going to be my best pick for sound or auditory enhancement. As for lighting, it depends on which process I am working on. In the shop, I have to have lots of light, so I have little control over this particular area, but in my studio, we have our lights on dimmers….so we can get the feel just right. We also have a main conference table with a large flat screen TV, several computers and white boards on 2 opposing walls (which sometimes become canvas’ for my daughters).

    2. TRIGGERS- Take your shoes off- Use triggers

One of the best ways to get your mind right for creating is to use triggers. These are simple little cues that will set your sub-conscience and brain into motion…every time. Literally, every time I sit down to create in the studio, which is carpeted, I take my boots off. This does several things for me. It is a great trigger, it relieves stress, it helps me relax….and lastly, I think my brain functions better with no boots on…really. (Disclaimer: stinky socks are not allowed!)

    3.  REFERENCE- Surround yourself with easy access materials (google, books, pictures, etc)

In our Studio, we try to achieve a nice balance of old world and new world….or classic and contemporary…digital and analog….you get the picture. So, a very nice handmade mahogany meeting table, contemporary black desks and some nice oak and ash bookcases. These bookcases are loaded with my favorite reading materials, artwork and just cool accoutrements and visual pieces. We also have a 42” flat-screen TV, 3 computers and 2 white boards. ACCESS is a must! Being able to quickly pull up reference shots on google images, pull out a book or old notebook with designs or notes makes things flow so much faster…and as a creator, you have to be able to capture FAST…so also, think about a recording device to capture EVERYTHING!!

    4.  DISCIPLINE- Set a time to Create and stick to it

I list this last, but this may be the single most important factor in not only helping you to release the Creative Genius that is in you, but it will also make you way more efficient and productive!! At ethos, our design/creative team sits down at the same time every day for at least one hour. Rarely do we miss a day…and occasionally, there is that off day where you sit and stare at each other and not much comes out…but those are very rare. The reality is, the conditioning of your brain to begin to release in the same way every day…will begin to produce major results in record time! In fact, you will consciously begin to look forward to the time…even with anticipation. This will usually occur quickly if you set the same time every day or every other day.

So, while these are only 4 ways, they are very simple and work very well for me and my team! So maybe start here and evolve quickly into new and better ways for you and your team to flow into your CREATIVE RELEASE….your Muse!!
